Pensioners have spoken about living in wartime Halstead as campaigners try to save historic air raid shelters from bulldozers.

The 16 buildings are on land east of the High Street, where Tesco hopes to build a new supermarket.

Although the plans were thrown out in January, the retailer has yet to confirm its next move.

Campaigners opposed to the store want to preserve the Second World War shelters, which Braintree Council said made a positive contribution to the town’s historic identity.
