The manager of a day centre is not surprised at figures showing over-65s spend the equivalent of 100 days a year alone.

Research published this week suggests one in five over-65s spend their waking day alone, and many over-75s will go an entire weekend without seeing another person.

Halstead Day Centre, in Bridge Street, provides a lifeline for the 80 older people who visit every week.

Centre manager Veronica Harman said: “The majority of people just want companionship. The staff make them welcome and it is all like a second family.”
