Halstead: Day centre is 'lifeline' to lonely elderly people

The manager of a day centre is not surprised at figures showing over-65s spend the equivalent of 100 days a year alone.
Research published this week suggests one in five over-65s spend their waking day alone, and many over-75s will go an entire weekend without seeing another person.
Halstead Day Centre, in Bridge Street, provides a lifeline for the 80 older people who visit every week.
Centre manager Veronica Harman said: “The majority of people just want companionship. The staff make them welcome and it is all like a second family.”
