Halstead: 'High rates on High Street are crippling business' Halstead: 'High rates on High Street are crippling business'

Crippling business rates are forcing traders out of the high street, it has been claimed.

Hannah Nightingale, owner of Flame hairdressers, has relocated her salon to Hedingham Road in Halstead after 13 years in High Street.

She claimed one of the main reasons for the move was the sky-high rates charged by Braintree District Council and called on the authority to do more to boost business in the town.

A council spokesman said: “Through the Backing our Towns programme in 2012/13, we have launched a range of initiatives to support our traders, seeking to increase footfall and bring people back in to the three towns.”
