A large-scale project to restore a unique 12th century church has received a funding boost from a national grant scheme.

St John the Baptist Church, in Little Maplestead, will receive £5,000 from the National Churches Trust to go towards ongoing repair work.

In 2011, the Friends of the Round Church group launched a drive to raise £100,000 to preserve the building.

The church, which is one of only four English round churches still in use, has large cracks in its crumbling interior plasterwork.

On Wednesday, friends group treasurer Chris Gosling joined architect Tim Venn at the church to survey the site, which is undergoing the second of three stages of renovation.
