Generous donors have now given nearly £2,000 to help grieving parents buy a headstone for their four-year-old son.

Danielle Uren and James Cackett lost Mackenzie to cancer last June after a two-year battle with the disease.

The couple, of Juniper Close, Halstead, took more than six months off work to be by his bedside during his illness, which meant they could not afford to pay the full £3,600 cost of his memorial upfront.

But Clare Dawson and Jo Mayne, benefits officers at Braintree Council, started a fundraising campaign and raised £829.

An anonymous donor also gave £1,000 and the company making Mackenzie’s headstone has offered to engrave the lettering for free.
