Halstead: Traders say majority of shoppers approve if Tesco plans
Businesses claim support is mounting for a supermarket giant’s plans to move into Halstead, while another new store has moved a step closer.
Protesters, who were worried about the potential loss of woodland and historic air raid shelters, celebrated when Tesco’s plans for a store off High Street were refused by Braintree Council’s planning committee in January.
Tesco has yet to reveal its next move, but a group of traders quickly set out to prove the majority of residents were actually in favour of the plans by carrying out a survey of their customers.
Andrew Callaghan, manager of Meat Inn, in The Centre, claimed 163 customers had indicated they were in favour of the plans, while 24 were against and four had no opinion.
Chris Marshall, a partner at Toy Crazy, in Weavers Court, said the survey was on his counter for about a week and got 69 names in favour and 12 against.
Meanwhile, plans for a supermarket at the EMD factory in Kings Road have moved a step closer after the judicial review period passed for anyone wishing to challenge Braintree Council’s decision to grant permission for the store.
