Braintree: Politician speaks out about eating disorders
4:00pm Tuesday 19th February 2013 in News
A politician has revealed how his weight plummeted to eight stone as a result of an eating disorder.
Braintree MP Brooks Newmark was unable to eat for six months as a 17-year-old in the 1970s, as a result of stress.
He described how he even struggled to eat a single pea while in his final A-level year at boarding school and suffered severe headaches, leading to an addiction to aspirin.
The MP, who recovered and has not suffered a relapse, spoke out about his experiences in a backbench debate to coincide with Eating Disorder Awareness Week on Thursday, to show “there is life after anorexia.”
