A teaching assistant lost an eye after suffering an aggressive fungal infection which she claims was caused by a disposable contact lens.

Jacqui Stone, who lived in Halstead for about ten years before moving to Rayne, spent more than 17 weeks in hospital and underwent 22 operations as doctors battled in vain to save her left eye.

The mother-of-two, formerly of Sudbury Road and Chaffinch Way, eventually had it removed following fears the infection would penetrate her optic nerve and enter her brain.

Mrs Stone, 42, said: “The amount of operations they did to try and save it was incredible but it was just too strong.

“One of the transplants seemed to be doing really well but within days the fungus had eaten away at it again and the stitches had collapsed.”
