Police to crackdown on dangerous drivers
7:00am Tuesday 5th February 2013 in News
CARELESS and inconsiderate drivers will be targeted in new road safety campaigns.
Traffic officers and other organisations are joining forces to tackle those who tailgate, undercut or bully other drivers on the county's roads.
The drive is part of a bid to cut more than 700 crashes which cause deaths or serious injuries in Essex each year.
Police commissioner Nick Alston has chosen road safety as one of his policing priorities for the coming four years.
Traffic officer Sgt Simon Willsher said drivers who follow cars too closely and weave in or out of traffic are often responsible for serious crashes.
He said: “Careless and inconsiderate drivers who pass others in the inside lane, those who hug middle lanes and those who intimidate and bully others out of the way need to be prosecuted.
“We are working on an operation to target them because when you arrive at a serious crash it is rare it has been caused by a driver’s first offence.
“Those exhibiting bad behaviour tend to have a bad driving record and just get worse if they are allowed to carry on and then they are involved in a serious incident.
“We need more punishments and to hit them hard when we come across them so they don’t continue driving that way and cause one of the serious crashes.”

People drive across that blatantly on the wrong side of the road....yes, it may be in the wrong place, but ...that doesn't make it right.

Can we also target people who go too slow causing annoyance for others, and generally people who are no longer fit to drive a car and cause more accidents than they realise?

The A12 any weekday morning between 7am and 9am would be a great starting point.

I suggest they get on with the job instead of talking about what they hope to achieve.
Please feel free to disagree (or agree) as the case may be!

Sorry to state the obvious but it is the old bill's job to detect and prosecute bad driving be it; careless, dangerous, alcohol or drugs, related.

i drove at the speed limit of 30 MPH.
I had Impatient drivers behind driving too close, In an attempt to make me drive faster.
30 MPH was the prescribed limit,
30 MPH was my speed,
30 MPH should have been the late for work/school/ shopping following drivers also.
the road side signs say,
NO excuses for speeding !!

The police should start in Lidls car park where a fair proportion of drivers ignore the LEFT TURN road markings (most are 60+ !!). They should also clamp down on these idiots who drive with their front fog lights on. They could also start on the rounabout outside Colchester station. Every time I go around there theres always a cab that jumps the lights when the others have turned to red.

The people complaining about being held up by slower drivers sound just the sort the police are refering too with this latest campaign, whats your hurry? the world is going to last for ages yet.
Driving standards have become very poor and it helps not one bit picking on a particular age group, it is across all groups, young and old need to improve.
Perhaps the pathetic driving standards could be improved by some decent driving instruction, not the poor attempts at learning how to pass the test you see taking place on quiet out of town streets..train to drive not learn how to pass tests.

Government thinking of reducing the speed limit to 20 miles per hour - I wonder what people complaining of slow drivers will do then? Also need to remember that people with smaller eco friendly cars don't have the same power when it comes to pulling away and need a little time to get up their speed not a big white van trying to jump in their boot!!! Start with the A12 Essex Police some of the stunts are amazing especially in bad weather. So many people seem to want to die or kill someone innocent.

i dont sit up people boot but if it safe to do so when they are doing 30 in a 60 i will over take but i give plenty of room and i only safe to do so! i have people sit up my bum when i am in a 30 i just slow down , i wont speed beause of them. people all ways blame the younger drives for driving to fast but older pwople are just as bad they think they are better drives and know the road as they been driving longer.

But jeff if you were in a 60 zone doing 30 and you had a stream of vehicles behind you what would you do ? I think that is what the posters are getting at. The police should start in Lidls car park where a fair proportion of drivers ignore the LEFT TURN road markings (most are 60+ !!). scoot, if it was a 60 limit, take a guess at what speed I would be driving.
Ok, If road conditions were appropiate, then I would drive to the prescribed speed limit for that road at that time,
but only if conditions permitted so.
To set your mind at ease, I am a capable driver/rider of many vehicles.
Luckily I am no where as bad you think me & others are.
But thankyou for your comments.

Also time to rein in a lot of younger women in the 25 -40 age groups, they are often exceeding speed limits and ignoring rules of the road.
