Halstead: Businesses back rebuffed supermarket plan Halstead: Businesses back rebuffed supermarket plan

Businesses have given their backing to a supermarket giant’s stalling plans to move into Halstead.

Tesco’s application for a large store on land off High Street, which it claimed would deliver 130 jobs, was refused by Braintree Council’s planning committee last week.

An independent retail assessment estimated that the convenience turnover of Halstead town centre would drop by 29.3 per cent if Tesco’s proposed store was developed.

However, a number of traders have now said a town centre supermarket is vital for the survival of the town’s smaller businesses.

It is said that turkeys never vote for an early Christmas. In general that is true, but apparently not so in Halstead.
How many of these unnamed traders would still be in business a couple of years after Tesco opened?

We already have 2 supermarkets which are underused. As a resident I would not want yet another boring old supermarket removing yet more interest from the town. If I could afford it that would be a great incentive for me to move out of Halstead to somewhere more interesting. If they really have to come then they should look at sites which are more suitable and would need a lot less disruptive work whilst having better access such as EMD.
