An election for a new town councillor is to be held after a member stepped down.

David Sharp, who represented Holy Trinity south ward, is understood have resigned because he moved near to Chelmsford.

Braintree Council has called an election and nominations had to be returned to the returning officer at Causeway House, Braintree, no later than noon tomorrow.

If more than one nomination is received the polling will be on February 21.

The election is expected to cost Halstead Town Council £3,000 which will be paid from its reserves.

The list of nominations will be posted on Braintree Council’s website after the closing date.
