Halstead is in danger of becoming a ghost town, according to those in favour of Tesco moving in.

Members of Braintree Council’s planning committee emphasised on Tuesday that it was the specific application that they were unhappy with and not Tesco per se, but a group of unhappy residents and businesses believe people would pick fault wherever a supermarket was planned.

Moira Fooks, 58, of Coggeshall Way, said: “Braintree Council need to wake up to the fact that Halstead is becoming a ghost town and it needs some life put back into it.”

Hazel Callaghan, 44, who grew up in Halstead before moving to Great Yeldham, has started a survey which she hopes will illustrate the level of support for Tesco's plans.

trust me you wanna see a ghost town? then let tesco in. Tesco and asda moved into the 4 nearest villages to me, 3 are now effectively dead, not a single independent business left on the high streets, the 4th is slowly dying. Look at stanhope sometime, it raised its local history, encouraged small local businesses, look at it now, huge caravan site tourists visit year round, not a single shop in the area lacks for business. Those shelters are something hardly anybody sees anymore, with a minimal effort that could be a huge tourist draw, the woods themselves are bonny too, flattening them would nuke the possibility of tourism for minimal jobs, More people are holidaying at home these days as the economy is in such a mess, it would be great to see that used to its fullest potential.

You're missing the point. Halstead has hardly any good independent businesses anyway. A bakers, a butcher, a florist... after that, I'm really struggling to think of any decent independent businesses who sell goods which Tesco would also sell. And they already compete successfully with Sainsbury's and Co-op, so why would their customers suddenly turn their back on them for Tesco? The charity shops, beauticians and curry houses which make up most of the rest of the High Street are hardly going to be affected!!
