Halstead: Birthing centre one of town's best kept secrets? Halstead: Birthing centre one of town's best kept secrets?

The option of giving birth with one to one midwife care in a suite of private rooms appears to be one of the town’s best kept secrets.

Only two children were born in Halstead Hospital’s birthing centre last year but the town’s midwife team are hoping to drastically increase this and have set themselves the ambitious target of 60 births for 2013.

They also hope a birthing pool can be installed as they believe this will dramatically increase the number of mums wanting to use the centre.

It can be used by women who meet the criteria for a home birth.

The midwives are on call 24 hours per day and will open up the centre whenever it is needed- even on Christmas day.

Midwife Fiona Binnie said: “It is the woman’s choice and this is really giving them another choice.

“We hope this year there will be about 60 bookings, it is a huge jump."
