Halstead: Campaigners celebrate victory after Tesco plans refused
10:00am Friday 25th January 2013 in News
Campaigners celebrated a landmark victory after plans for a supermarket were thrown out.
Dozens of irate opponents to Tesco’s planned 2,825m2 store off Halstead High Street applauded as Braintree Council’s planning committee refused the application, while Halstead Town Council vice chairman, Jackie Pell, lauded it as a victory for people power.
Some residents were furious the supermarket giant intended to replace woodland, full of thriving wildlife and 16 historic air raid shelters, with a huge new store and 182-space car park.
