Police are warning motorists to take care ahead of Met Office forecasts for snow.

The county is currently on a yellow warning, which means residents should be prepared for bad weather.

Police are advising motorists to check their tyre pressure, ensure their anti-freeze is topped up and make sure their wiper blades are working.

They have also advised people to keep a blanket in the car if they are planning a long journey and to carry a shovel if they plan to go out after heavy snowfall.

Chief Inspector Justin Smith, said: "Hopefully the weather won’t be too bad this week but the advice is still to make sure your vehicle is winter ready, give it a once over check and that you have plenty of fuel.

"Remember that the roads can be very icy and you need to drive cautiously, reducing your speed and allowing extra time to brake.”

Aldi have got lots of snow shovels for sale at about £8 apiece. Seems a bit overpriced to me but then I have never felt the need to buy a snow shovel.

Why only take a shovel after heavy snowfall? Surely the better advice would be to monitor forecasts and take a shovel if heavy snow is in the forecast or already falling.

Problems get caused by the % of drivers who have absolutely no idea how to drive in snow. Once they get stuck and block the way, everybody else is far more likely to get blocked too. What that % is, I don´t know. Maybe 20%. But have one person blocking the road, especially halfway up a hill, and it pretty much closes that road off.

Please, if you´re not confident of driving in snow and ice, stay at home!
