A veteran councillor is set to be the oldest candidate to compete to keep his seat. Joe Pike, 83, is re-standing for election to represent Halstead on Essex County Council.

Mr Pike, of Bois Field Terrace, Halstead, joined the council in 1977 and has represented the town for 24 years.

Meanwhile, councillor for the Hedinghams, David Finch, is bidding to become council leader.

The deputy leader, who represents 33 parishes including Sible and Castle Hedingham, is standing for the role of Conservative group leader.

Current leader Peter Martin, 68, will not be standing for re-election in May.

Whoever wins the position is likely to be the council’s leader after the elections, if they win their seat.
