Colne Valley golfers off to flying start

Colne Valley got their 2008 Thornton Cup campaign off to a fine start with a home win over Woodford.

Valley built up a 3-1 lead in the morning foursomes and following the afternoon singles, ran out 12-3 winners.

After finding himself four down with four to play, Karl Bowdon looked down and out.

But he managed to stage a typical fight back to finish his game level and gain a point towards the overall team total.

The win earned Colne Valley a very tough away fixture against Thorndon Park.

The Millennium Trophy is a mixed pairs greensomes competition played simultaneously over six locations throughout Essex.

After all of the scores were totted up at the end of the day's play, Colne Valley were found to be clear winners.

carded Playing at Colchester, Colne Valley's own Lyn and Roger Bewley carded a round of 42 stableford points, the best score of all 108 pairs playing in the competition.

A successful morning foursomes round saw Colne build up a healthy 6-0 lead going into the afternoon singles.

Both sides felt the effect of the very warm conditions but Valley managed to keep their golf cool and ran out 14-4 winners.

Meanwhile, the annual Captain's Day was held to help boost the coffers for the captain's selected charities.

Following a shotgun start to cope with the large field of entrants, the Men's winner was Mike Fedorow, with Sammie Cutmore taking the Ladies prize.
