Colne Valley upset the odds

Colne Valley Golf Club upset the odds to beat Chelmsford 9-6, in the opening round of the Leslie Wood competition.

Chelmsford arrived at the Valley as firm favourites after appearing in four finals in recent years.

However, following some outstanding match play on the day, it was Colne Valley who went through to face Belfairs in the next round.

Colne Valley Ladies section held their Spring meeting Stableford competition, with Lyn Anderson winning on 40 points.

June Kenington was runner-up with 36 points, while Joan Silk took third spot with 33 points.

Meanwhile, The Essex Golf Club, Earls Colne were narrowly beaten in the opening round of the Essex Golf Union's prestigious Thornton Cup.

They were beaten 8-6 by Maldon and missed out on the second round.

Five Lakes are through by the skin of their teeth.

Their round one tie against Three Rivers was one of two matches determined by a single sudden death play-off between nominated players, after the teams finished level.
