Biography

MP Since - 1977 (by-election) Majority - 13,008 Born - 23/06/1937, Married (2 sons, 1 daughter)

Education - King Edward VI School, Birmingham, Cheltenham College, Oriel College, Oxford.

Previous Occupation - Secretary, Librarian, Treasurer, Oxford Union Society (1959-60), Executive in the Plastics and Chemicals Industries (1960-70), Public Affairs Consultant (1974-97).

Personal Overview - A long serving MP, who has some business and public affairs experience. He has spent his parliamentary career on the Backbenches, serving as a One-Nation Heathite Conservative during the Thatcher years was a surefire route to maintainence of backbench status. Without a party career path to follow he advanced to become Chairman of Ways & Means (Deputy Speaker) following the 1997 election, a position he retained following he election of Speaker Martin in 2000.

Political History - Member for Middleton and Prestwich (1970-74), Member for Saffron Walden (1977-), PPS to Secretary of State for Education and Science (1979-81).
