Coronation Street’s local newspaper has come under fire from fans for shoddy editing and aggressive reporting.

The much-loved Weatherfield Gazette, which counts Ken Barlow among its former news hounds, fell from favour in Monday night’s episode of the ITV soap thanks to two separate scenes that jarred with fans.

A shot of Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis) and Gail McIntyre (Helen Worth) reading the paper showed a clanger of a spelling mistake (“Weatherfield Councilor”) in the splash and a back page lead about the Scottish FA Cup – despite the soap being based in Manchester.

There was further controversy surrounding the paper due to a reporter pitching up on the cobbles trying to track down Sean Tully to ask him about a row with a country pub owner, about whether he and boyfriend Billy Mayhew could share a room there.

Some viewers thought the tenacious young journalist was way too pushy.

Others thought she showed an impressive determination to get the story.

But there were those who were just confused about why they’d cast someone who looked so much like Michelle Keegan’s recently-departed character Tina McIntyre.
