New US chat-show host James Corden will be hoping to join a list of British stars who went on to enjoy success in the US following their small screen debuts.
Simon Cowell
The straight-talking TV judge first made his name with US audiences on American Idol and went on to launch US versions of the X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.
But the US X Factor was axed after three series, following a drop in ratings and Cowell’s decision to return to the UK show. His attempt to make Cheryl Fernandez-Versini a star in the US famously failed.
Ricky Gervais
The British comedian was embraced by the US following the success of The Office, which led to a US spin-off. He has hosted three Golden Globe ceremonies, surviving with his career intact despite insulting a host of film stars.
Piers Morgan
Piers joined CBS to take over the prime-time slot from veteran host Larry King in 2011. His show, Piers Morgan Live, was cancelled last year following plummeting ratings and he later announced he had left the US network.
Cat Deeley
Cat has succeeded where her former CD:UK co-presenters have failed in cracking the US. The star is now a household name as a presenter of So You Think You Can Dance alongside another British export, its co-creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe.
Gordon Ramsay
The fiery Scottish chef is now an even bigger name in the US than he is in the UK. While Kitchen Nightmares has ended after a decade-long run, Gordon still enjoys success across the pond with the likes of Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef.
Bear Grylls
The adventurer’s survival format has been embraced by some of Hollywood’s finest. Running Wild with Bear Grylls saw the survivalist take A-list stars such as Ben Stiller, Channing Tatum, and Zac Efron into the wilderness.
John Oliver
The British comedian landed his own HBO show, Last Week Tonight, after making his name in the US as a correspondent on The Daily Show, hosted by Jon Stewart.
Martin Bashir
Bashir came to prominence in the US when he interviewed Diana, Princess of Wales. But the MSNBC TV host resigned from the network in 2013, nearly three weeks after making graphic remarks on the air about former Alaska governor Sarah Palin.
Craig Ferguson
The Scottish-born comedian is now a US citizen. He has enjoyed huge success as host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, choosing to go after 10 years. The slot was later given to fellow Briton Corden.
Tracey Ullman
The actress, writer and singer won over audiences in the US with shows such as The Tracey Ullman Show. She is now returning to the BBC with her own comedy series.
