A new "socially focused" award for songs that carry a message is to be presented for the first time at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Glasgow next month.

The "best song with a message" category has been created to "recognise songs that have an empowering impact on young people, tackling important issues they care about and inspiring them to have a social conscience", the music channel said.

Beyonce's Pretty Hurts, Arcade Fire song We Exist, We Are Here by Alicia Keys, Take Me To Church by Hozier and Meghan Trainor's All About That Bass are in the running for the award with songs that address gender identity, violence and self-acceptance, according to MTV.

Fans can vote for the winner on Instagram, Twitter and Vine.

It has also been announced that Enrique Iglesias is to perform at the ceremony at the SSE Hydro on November 9. Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande have already been named as other performers.

US rapper Nicki Minaj is to host the star-studded ceremony, with Katy Perry heading the nominations this year as she competes for seven prizes, ahead of Grande, who is in the running for six.

Pharrell Williams is up for five trophies, including best song and best video for his global hit Happy.

The awards are being held in Glasgow for the first time, though the city hosted MTV Crashes Glasgow in 2010.
