Web release joy for Paul, man behind LST

THIRTEEN years ago, Paul Brighton started chopping up tracks in his bedroom studio to create bootlegs for clubbers.

More than a decade on, the Hockley music wizard is stepping out from the shadows as one half of new urban project, LST.

The 29-year-old, of Broad Parade, is the producer behind up-and-coming Southampton MC and lyricist LST, real name Leigh Samuel Taylor.

The pair, who have been working together since 2003, have just signed a licensing and publishing deal with New York label, Diamond Life Records, which is managed by former Sade drummer Paul Cooke.

LST will now release their This Is England EP digitally through the label on February 18.

“Paul Cooke heard the track This Is England and was really impressed with it,” says Paul, who by day is a financial analyst, in London.

“It just went from there and he signed that song as part of a seven track deal.

“I think this is going to be really good for us.”

Diamond Life focuses on delivering independent music to the world’s most popular download retailers like iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster.

The company has a number of industry connections and LST currently feature on the US Windows Media Guide homepage, next to R&B superstar Beyonce.

“We couldn’t believe it when we saw it,” explains Paul.

“We signed the deal and within three days we were on the website, right next to Beyonce. It’s good to be able to go to someone who can do that for you.”

Aside from just being the “background man”, as he describes himself, Paul does get out into the live arena with Leigh, 24, to take control of the music.

He’ll be doing exactly that when LST support Mobo award-winning outfit N-Dubz, in Southampton, next month.

“I’m looking forward to that as it’s going to be really good for our profile,” says Paul. “The ambition is to keep working with Leigh and hopefully keep this momentum going.”
