Apprenticeships are available across Essex which provide a direct path into a career in the UK’s booming catering industry. South Essex College is one institution that is looking for catering apprentices. Students work towards a Level 2 or 3 qualification in Catering and Hospitality and are based in the cafes and restaurants at the college’s Thurrock and Southend campuses. Every aspect of the industry is covered in the course. Students experience a variety of responsibilities from working front of house and honing their customer service skills, to cooking in the kitchens and preparing fine dining food for members of the public. Martin Barrie, senior catering manager at the college, said: “This is an excellent opportunity if you want to start a career in this field. We’re a great team and it’s a fun place to work. “Apprentices have a huge range of career opportunities and while still training  play a vital role in the college’s own hospitality and catering operations.” Current catering apprentice, Georgia Inseal, says she loves every moment of the course. Georgia, 18, from Benfleet, said: “From a young age I’ve dreamt of being a chef and running my own restaurant. This apprenticeship offers the perfect route to making it all happen. “It’s not just a matter of learning practical cooking and service skills. I’ve found the course has given me a boost of confidence. “I’ve always loved cooking, but my kitchen skills have improved beyond expectations. I would  encourage anyone who wants to be a chef, restaurateur or front of house manager to follow the apprenticeship route. I’ve learnt more than I thought I would.” Apprenticeship positions are offered on a fixed term basis, for 14-18 months depending on qualification level. The applicant must have a passion for food and/or the service industry, be a team player, and be able to talk to a range of people. Colchester Institute’s catering department also has apprenticeship training posts available. As well as general food and beverage courses and apprenticeships, the institute also offers full degree courses in food and beverage studies. The course covers such items as the law related to the food industry, social trends in eating, and even menu design.
